Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the second leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in the United States. However, the most prominent symptom of PE is shortness of breath – a symptom associated with many different disease processes. EMS providers need to be able to thoroughly assess patients for possible PE and, in order to do so, providers must have a working knowledge of the risk factors, signs and symptoms of PE.
